Chapter Six

Monday morning, usually Piper was at her tiny apartment resting after her night shift. But today she was moving to the house in the city. She didn’t have to move much because that house was also stocked with everything she needed, clothes, food and a household staff. She toured the house that Drew had so modestly called a little box. Well the little box had six bedrooms all en suite, a kitchen she could fit a tiny café into and a garden that mirrored a tiny park. The only thing that she was glad about was that in this house she only had two people who nagged her about her needs every ten seconds. The sad thing was none of them was her husband. Piper got ready to go to Drew’s office. The obvious purpose for the trip was to show Piper off but the other was that she was needed to sign for her bank account and credit cards. She never thought she would need credit cards, before she thought she had everything she ever needed. Now she was sure she had an excess of stuff.

Piper still had an hour to kill, and in a second she decided what she was going to do with all her extra time. She loved being a nurse, and she knew she would love it more now since she wouldn’t be working for the money. That was obvious.

Piper saw the butler enter the room and she jumped to her feet. His stiff demeanor always made her nervous and nine times out of ten she felt like the roles should be reversed. That she should be the butler.

“Excuse me, Mr. Mathews.”

“Just Mathews, madam.”

Piper counted all the creased lines of the face and concluded that there was no just, with Mathews. “Right, I wanted to go to Chicago General, is that possible?”

A worried frown claimed its place with the other lines seaming his forehead. “Are you ill, ma’am?”

“No, of course not. I just wanted…” Piper sighed. “It’s where I work.”

“Work, ma’am?” his dark barely there eyebrow rose in suspicion.

Piper understood the confusion that must have been clouding his mind. Why would the wife of a billionaire want to work? She looked around the lavish living room. Mathews probably expected her to lounge around, entertain other women of her now new social standings and probably just shop all day.

“Yes, work. I’m a nurse. Is there anyone who can take me or do I have to take a cab?”

“No, of course not ma’am. Sam will be waiting for you outside. Excuse me ma’am.”

Sam, Piper mouthed. Apparently there was a third person in the house she didn’t know about.

Piper walked to the front door and there was an older man in a driver’s uniform waiting for her with the door open. A cordial smile and she settled in. She wondered if he knew where she was going. There was a gigantic partition between them and Piper didn’t know how to work the controls. She sat behind patiently and twenty minutes later the car came to a halt.
